The 16-17 Black Knight Badminton Ontario Jr HP A Series #7 offers benefits to athletes beyond the sport

TORONTO—March 20, 2017—185 of the province’s best badminton players hit the courts over the weekend for the 16-17 Black Knight Badminton Ontario Jr HP A Series #7 KCBC. Athletes from the U11, U13, U15, U17 and U19 divisions participated in a variety of matches in Richmond Hill on both Saturday and Sunday. Results have been posted for your convenience.

Jasper Tang of Suria Badminton Centre in Markham was able to sum up the weekend event perfectly.

“It’s very competitive here, and it’s really fun playing with others.”

The 13 year old, who trains for five hours each week, claims losing matches has become a valuable part of his growth as an athlete.

“I like that I have a chance to learn from my mistakes, to try harder. Tournaments like this one mean that I can watch other players on the court, and (observe) their shots. It’s nice to meet new friends, but (more importantly), tournaments like these remind all of us to play fairly and not cheat.”

Troy Chandra, Head Coach & Director at Suria Badminton Centre, spoke to Badminton Ontario about the importance of seeing fair play in action on the courts.

“We try to help the kids become good badminton players, but we want them to be good people first. Sometimes kids just want to win – and winning is good, everybody loves to win, not just the kids, the parents as well – but sometimes some athletes forget to be a good winner, a winner with grace. Teaching badminton is easy, but teaching the kids to remember the importance of having a strong moral foundation and a strong character can be harder. But no matter what, you have to start there – or whatever else you try to teach them won’t stick.”

Chandra points to the competition in Ontario as being very strong. He also suggests that the province’s sport governing body, Badminton Ontario, is helping to shape each of these athletes.

“Whether one of this weekend’s athletes wins a consolation prize or is a Triple Crown winner, Badminton Ontario has managed to bring together athletes of different races, backgrounds, and personalities together. The organization is helping all of them to grow and improve. With an organization as strong as Badminton Ontario, all of these athletes are moving forward.”

For many of Ontario’s competitive badminton athletes – including those who competed at this weekend’s 16.17 BLACK KNIGHT Badminton Ontario Jr HP A Series #7 – the benefits are many. As children, they get to broaden their social network and make new friends, but they also develop the central peg on which to build the rest of their young lives.

Badminton Ontario would like to thank Black Knight for its continued sponsorship of the Black Knight Junior A and Junior B circuits. Registration for the BLACK KNIGHT Jr HP A Championships – All Ages – Markham PanAm Centre is open until April 7, 2017.

Badminton Ontario (BON) is a not for profit amateur sport organization responsible for badminton within the province of Ontario. Badminton Ontario’s vision is to connect with all athletes participating in badminton in Ontario, inspire athletes to cherish badminton and establish it as their sport for life.
