Team Ontario Wins Big at Canadian National Championships

Team Ontario came out strong as they took the Canadian National Championships by storm this year as four Ontario badminton players won gold in their respective categories. In addition, Team Ontario managed to podium in all the categories as well, capping off a strong showing at this year’s tournament. Last year’s Male Single champion Jason Ho-Shue capped off an amazing season. At last year’s nationals Jason became the youngest Male Singles champion in Badminton Canada history and this year he retained his title in convincing fashion.

On the women’s side the Markham native Brittany Tam put on an amazing showing at the event as she won her first championship title. She started the tournament as an unseated competitor but fought hard and never gave up as she reached for Gold! Which continues Ontario domination as another first-place finish went to an Ontario native!

“Badminton Canada set up a real good event, lots of people came out to watch the final and my dad actually came; I am really happy he got to see me win my first national championship” – Brittney Tam

The doubles side of the tournament also saw Team Ontario dominate as well as Jason Ho-Shue picked up another gold along side his partner Nyl Yakura! This win was special not only being Jason’s and Nyl’s first gold in this category but Ontario managed to capture the first-place win after years of BC being on top.

“I’ve never been so focused and when the last bird hit the net on their side I couldn’t believe it” – Nyl Yakura

In the women’s doubles Michelle Tong took a gold and in the mixed category Rachel Honderich also received gold with her partner from BC Toby Ng. In addition to his two first place wins, Jason also managed to capture bronze in the mixed doubles category with Michelle Tong. We at Badminton Ontario want to again congratulate our amazing athletes! All their hard work and practice has paid off and we look forward to seeing take on their next challenge!
