RECAP: 26.27 Victor Ontario Junior B #1 – MPAC – U11 U13 U15 U17 U19

The courts at the Markham Pan Am Centre bustled with relentless energy this weekend as junior competitors contested a packed two-day schedule spanning singles, doubles, and mixed disciplines. Day 1 established the tone across the singles draws, where top seeds demonstrated composure under pressure while hard-fought upsets shook up several brackets. In the U11 Boys Singles, top-seeded Lucas Alvarez navigated his path to the final before meeting second-seeded Austin Lin, where Lin showcased pinpoint baseline control to capture the title (21-14, 21-16). Meanwhile, the U13 Girls Singles featured an impressive display of stamina by Katherine Chen; after surviving a demanding three-game quarterfinal against Claire Zhang (15-21, 21-13, 21-19) and a tense semifinal over second-seeded Joy Li (21-17, 19-21, 21-19), Chen held her rhythm in the final to overcome Cindy Zhou (21-17, 21-18).

The elder singles divisions matched that intensity with dramatic rallies and tactical patience. Third-seeded Ryan Dong engineered an exceptional run through the U15 Boys Singles, holding off Ethan Zhang in a marathon semifinal (21-18, 17-21, 21-19) before maintaining his composure in the championship match to defeat Aaron Tan (21-19, 21-18). In the U17 Boys Singles, top seed Mason Yu proved steady under fire, claiming the final over Joshua Song (21-17, 21-15). On the girls’ side, the U17 singles bracket brought edge-of-the-seat drama as third-seeded Isabella Du held off Chloe Hou in a grueling, three-game semifinal (21-16, 17-21, 23-21) to advance to the final, where Grace Zhang sustained attacking pressure to claim the division title (21-15, 21-16).

As competition transitioned into Day 2, doubles and mixed doubles partnerships took center stage, demanding rapid communication, seamless court rotations, and physical endurance from athletes carrying over momentum from singles play. In the U11 Mixed Doubles, Lucas Alvarez rebounded from his singles runner-up finish, joining forces with Kelly Pan to construct a dominant championship run, capped by a victory against Kyle Deng and Tiffany Ho (21-11, 21-12). Alvarez then solidified his standout multi-discipline weekend in the U11 Boys Doubles alongside Austin Lin, as the singles rivals paired up to edge Kyle Deng and Raylan Leung in a high-stakes championship clash (21-19, 23-21).

That multi-podium excellence reverberated across the intermediate flights. In the U13 divisions, Aaron Chen emerged as a dual-discipline champion, first teaming with Eric Wang to secure the U13 Boys Doubles crown against Derek Luo and Austin Yang (21-16, 21-15), before returning to the court with Kelly Yu in U13 Mixed Doubles to fend off Marcus He and Cindy Zhou (21-14, 21-18). On the girls’ side, Cindy Zhou also earned dual-discipline accolades, complementing her singles silver with a runner-up mixed finish and a spirited run to the U13 Girls Doubles final alongside Joy Li, where the top-seeded tandem of Amber Li and Angela Liang ultimately prevailed (21-16, 21-16).

The tournament reached an electric crescendo in the U15 and U17 tandem events. In U15 Girls Doubles, the unseeded duo of Abigail Lee and Selina Wu mounted a stunning bracket charge, knocking off top-seeded partners throughout the draw and outlasting Ella Deng and Stephanie Fan in a spirited final (21-19, 21-18). The U15 Boys Doubles crown was captured by Ethan Zhang and Ryan Dong, whose dynamic front-court attacking earned Dong his second title of the tournament over Andrew Hu and Kingsley Tan (21-17, 21-17). Closing out the weekend, the U17 divisions spotlighted remarkable tactical mastery. Mason Yu and Joshua Song paired up in U17 Boys Doubles to claim the title over Ethan Cheung and Alan Liu (21-16, 21-18), cementing Yu as a double champion. Alongside them, Grace Zhang echoed that multi-title standard, adding the U17 Girls Doubles crown with Sophia Jiang (21-13, 21-14) over Chloe Hou and Nicole Zhu to complete a weekend defined by technical brilliance and athletic resilience.
