Following their success in the semi-finals in women’s doubles, Badminton Ontario spoke with partners Cara De Belle and Sarah Gale. Both athletes, born and raised in Toronto, consider The Granite Club their home away from home and train together five to six days per week. Cara De Belle expressed their shared pleasure, confirming that it felt especially good to win in the semis on home turf.

“We’ve really been climbing towards this goal and that win all season long. We’ve lost in the semi-finals so often, even last year around this same time, so to have won feels amazing – especially at our home club.”

Sarah Gale confirmed that having the home club host a tournament like the 15.16 Black Knight Jr. A HP #7 Granite provides tremendous training as the girls and their fellow athletes move toward Provincials and Nationals.

“The matches here this weekend have been really good. A lot of our competitors are ranked among the top in Canada, and are definitely the best in Ontario. This semi-final win has given us a lot of confidence, and we needed that.”

Coached by Mike De Belle, both athletes appear to be in good hands under the tutelage of the Head Badminton Professional at The Granite Club, who has been with the club for 24 years. Heading into the weekend tournament, Mike knew that hosting an event of this magnitude would be advantageous for multiple reasons, not the least of which was the benefit of his athletes having home court advantage. Mike spoke of the many perks of hosting this past weekend’s HP #7.

“This tournament is different, with Badminton Ontario stepping in to assist, which I’m kind of liking. But for us, this is really a chance to showcase some of our own athletes, and that means inspiring many of the junior players over the course of the weekend. It also means the squash and tennis players in the building will be exposed to a whole new sport this weekend.”

And a successful and inspiring weekend it was.

Badminton Ontario thanks Black Knight for its continued sponsorship of the Black Knight Junior A and Junior B circuits.
