Hustle and hit at the 16-17 Black Knight Badminton Ontario Jr HP A Series #3

TORONTO—November 21, 2016—The Boulevard Club was home to this past weekend’s 16-17 Black Knight Badminton Ontario Jr HP A Series #3. The event, which unfolded on Saturday and Sunday, saw 91 athletes competing from 12 different Ontario clubs in U13-U17 matches.

Stephane Cadieux, Badminton Director at The Boulevard Club, was duly impressed with the competition on the courts over the weekend.

“We’re fortunate in the GTA to have the best players in the country. When you look at Junior National results – and those representing Canada on the international scene – it’s a very high percentage of Ontario kids. When you watch a tournament like this one unfold, you realize that many of these rivalries or pairings are the same ones you’ll end up seeing at National Championships later in the year. Right now, Ontario is the standard for the country, which means that everyone else is trying to catch up to us.”

Cadieux, when asked about hosting the event itself, was quick to praise the assistance The Boulevard Club had been given.

“It’s not that bad, really. Because of the support we get from Badminton Ontario, the software (we have access to), and many of the important things being set in place ahead of time, tournaments like these almost run themselves. It certainly helps to have the groundwork in place.”

Badminton Ontario’s Sarah Miller spoke with U17 athlete, Jacqueline Cheung (Mandarin Badminton Club), in the minutes leading up to her Girls Doubles match. Described as a hot contender for this year’s Junior Pan Am Championships, which will be held in Markham, Cheung humbly acknowledged that she is pleased with how her 2016-17 season has begun.

“I think these past two provincial tournaments have been great. I feel like I’ve improved and I’m playing better than last year. I feel confident heading into both games today (Girls Doubles with partner Tiffany Too and Mixed Doubles with partner Darren Choi). I mean, confident, but a little bit nervous, too. I’d say weekend is going well so far, and I actually really like the courts. It’s just a feeling I have, but I really like these courts!”

Cheung’s Mixed Doubles partner, Darren Choi (Lee’s Badminton), spoke candidly about the positive experiences he’d had over the course of the two-day event, along with what he and Cheung were hoping to achieve in their Mixed Doubles game later on Sunday afternoon.

“It’s going to be tough – right from the beginning – but I’m pretty sure we can win. We beat the second seed last tournament, so I’m pretty confident we can win this one. We’re also good friends, and we have a lot of fun and like to help each other improve. Also here, it’s really bright and I can see the bird a lot easier. There are no dark spots on the court, so you can see everything really clearly. “

The Boulevard Club’s well lit courts has provided a metaphor for success over the weekend.

This weekend’s Triple Crown Winners included:

Jackie Dent (U13) KC Badminton Club

Joshua Nguyen (U13) E Badminton Training Centre

Jacqueline Cheung (U17) Mandarin Badminton Club

Final results have been posted on the Badminton Ontario website for your convenience. Registration for the 16-17 Black Knight Badminton Ontario Jr. HP A Series #4 Seneca is open until Dec 2, 2016.
