ONTARIO WINS BID TO HOST THE U11 & U13 EASTERN QUALIFIER FOR THE 2017 PAN AM JUNIOR BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIP

As the host nation of the 2017 Pan Am Junior Championship, Badminton Canada has determined that for the 2017 Championships only we will endorse the entry of athletes in the U11 and U13 age groups through a qualifying process. Two Qualifying Events will be organized; one in the Western Canada and one Eastern Canada.

Badminton Ontario is proud to announce that the U11 and U13 Eastern Qualifier for the 2017 Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships will be hosted by Badminton Ontario from March 10-12, 2017 at Humber College; in conjunction with the ON Junior Elite.

1- To be eligible and qualify for the Pan Am team- U15/17/19- The selection criteria is posted on the Badminton Canada website. An athlete’s top 3 point totals from the Junior Elite Series and/or National Championships will be combined to come up with a total score. If a U13 wants to try and qualify for the Jr Pan Am team, they would need to play “up” to U15/17/19 at the Jr Elite Series events and/or National Championships. NOTE: You don’t need to use three scores, your points total might be enough by playing two events to rank you high enough, but it is much more likely that you qualify with three events than less than three.

2- To be eligible and qualify for the Pan Am team- U11/13- The only method of qualification for the U11/13 age groups is via the tournament being hosted simultaneously as the Ontario Junior Elite Series at Humber College. No combination of Jr Elite Series and/or National Championships competitions are in consideration for this age group

3- Athletes competing in both the Ontario Jr Elite and U11/U13 Jr Pan Am Qualifiers- Athletes are able to compete in both competitions simultaneously if they so choose, with a couple of caveats. For context, it is helpful to look at these as two separate tournaments happening at the same time which just happen to be at the same location-

a. Registration fees need to be paid for each event in order to compete at both events

b. Athlete minimum time between matches (30 minutes) will be respected, but the total number of matches on any given day could get quite high and cannot be guaranteed to be looked at as a factor

This means that the weekend could be tiring for the athletes and could impact their performance and/or potential qualification in either event

4- Qualification for National Championships- Just to re-confirm, there is no qualification necessary for competing in the U15/17/19 National championships in Moncton. It is an open event. So, competing at the Quebec/Toronto Junior Elite Series are not necessary to “qualify” for the Nationals, but they are points to help earn a place on the Jr Pan Am team.

Regulations and more details to follow.
