Restrictions specific to COVID-19:
– Badminton Ontario reserves the right to restrict or reduce the participation capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions. These limitations will be reviewed and communicated at the close of registration.
– Effective January 2022: Badminton Ontario tournaments will offer the U11, U13, U15, U17, and U19 age groups where applicable.  Athletes must be a minimum of 5 years old at the time of registration. 
– Effective February 2022: Badminton Ontario tournaments will offer singles, doubles, mixed doubles competitions.   
– Participants will be required to provide proof of vaccination. More information on vaccination proof and exemptions may be found in the following documents.

BLACK KNIGHT Junior A High Performance Tournament Series

Membership required: Performance (A) Membership Card

This tournament series is designed for athletes who are training several times a week to compete at an Elite level. Tournaments feature 5 age groups: U11, U13, U15, U17 and U19. Please see Eligibility Information for more information on which age groups you fit into. By competing in this Series you acquire ranking points, which are shown on the Ontario Ranking System. This allows you to gauge your development and success against other athletes in the province.  You can view the list of events by going to our Calendar, and selecting the Junior (A) HP Series from the filter.

Badminton Ontario Eligibility for 2021-2022 season:

1.       Athlete Participation by Age Groups

1.1.     Athlete eligibility for the 2021-2022 season is as follows:
1.1.1.   U11: born in 2012 or later
1.1.2:   U13: born in 2010 or later
1.1.3:   U15: born in 2008 or later
1.1.4.   U17: born in 2006 or later
1.1.5.   U19: born in 2004 or later

For every age group, the year stated is the birth year. For example, if you turn 18 on or after January 1st, 2022, you are eligible to play in the U19 division.  

2.       Badminton Club Representation

Athletes must be a member of a badminton club affiliated with Badminton Ontario. All athletes must be a 2021-2022 season Badminton Ontario cardholder (Performance A) to participate in the tournaments and championships on the Jr A HP series.

Black Knight Ontario Junior (A) High Performance Championship Qualifications Guidelines

Membership required: Performance (A) Athlete Card

For the 2021-2022 Season Only: U15, U17, and U19 Athletes must attain a minimum of 3000 Ontario ranking points in any one discipline to qualify for the Ontario Junior HP A Championships as of the Ontario Ranking publication that will be generated on April 4, 2022.
U11 and U13 Athletes have no ranking point qualification restrictions to qualify for the Ontario Junior HP A Championships.

 

A player qualifies for the Ontario Jr. A championships if they have accumulated 3000 points or more in any one discipline as listed in the Badminton Ontario Ranking System.  Points are listed in the Ontario Ranking System published online and championship qualification is in accordance to the ranking point level at two weeks before the start of the championships.  U11 Athletes have no ranking point qualification restrictions to qualify for the Ontario Junior HP A Championships.

All athletes must be a Canadian Citizen.  Non-Canadian citizens, must have landed immigrant status (Ontario PR card) and must have resided in ONTARIO for 12 months prior to the date of the tournament. An athlete is not eligible if such athlete has played in (or registered to play in) a closed championship in any other province or in any other country in the playing year in which the tournament is held.

Any player who qualifies in one discipline may enter in all disciplines of the same age group. Any player that qualifies or plays in the Ontario Jr. A Championship cannot play in the Ontario Jr. B Championships nor the Ontario Jr. C Championship in any age group. 

Each Badminton Ontario district at their discretion can nominate one girl’s singles and one boy’s singles player, one girls’ and one boy’s doubles team and one mixed doubles team in each age group who otherwise did not qualify by points. Generally, appeals will be permitted however, the tournament committee will reserve the right to permit additional players. For more information, please contact your District representative.

The tournament committee has the right to allow any Provincial Junior Player to compete on the basis of an accepted written appeal, received after the final High Performance junior circuit event.  The tournament director reserves the right to limit entries to all tournaments

BLACK KNIGHT Junior B Competitive Tournament Series

Membership required: Competitive (B) Membership

This tournament series is designed for athletes who may be training a few times a week to compete at a competitive level. This level of play is usually higher than the competition you find in your schools and allows you to develop your skills and work towards competing in the Jr (A) HP Series.

Your Competitive (B) Membership allows you to collect points on the Ontario Ranking System and allows points towards the Badminton Ontario Club Competitions Banner.

Tournaments feature up to 4 age groups: U13, U15, U17 and U19. Please see Eligibility Information for more information on which age groups you fit into. By competing in this Series you acquire points, which are shown on the Ontario Ranking System. This allows you to gauge your development and success against other athletes in the province.

3.       Athlete Participation Restrictions

Athletes listed on the Ontario Ranking System that meet the following criteria are restricted from competing in this Series:

  • U13: top male & female players with more than 3,000 points in any one event (singles, doubles, or mixed) at two weeks before the tournament start date are ineligible to play in the Jr B-Circuit
  • U15: top male & female players with more than 3,000 points in any one event (singles, doubles, or mixed) at two weeks before the tournament start date are ineligible to play in the Jr B-Circuit
  • U17: top male & female players with more than 3,000 points in any one event (singles, doubles, or mixed) at two weeks before the tournament start date are ineligible to play in the Jr B-Circuit
  • U19: top male & female players with more than 3,000 points in any one event (singles, doubles, or mixed) at two weeks before the tournament start date are ineligible to play in the Jr B-Circuit

A player qualifies for the Ontario Jr. B championships if they have accumulated a minimum of 800 points (and have no more than 2999 points) in any one discipline as listed in the Badminton Ontario Ranking System.  Points are listed in the Ontario Ranking System published online and championship qualification is in accordance to the ranking point level at two weeks before the start of the championships.

Ontario Junior C Regional Tournament Series

Membership required: P/T Regional (C) Membership

This tournament series is designed for athletes who are newly introduced to badminton training to get familiar with the Provincial competition environment.  This level of play is usually aimed towards those who have just been introduced to the sport or have just begun badminton training in the school, community centres, or badminton club setting. 

Your P/T Regional (C) Membership allows you to collect points on the Ontario Ranking System which allows you to gauge your competition level and readiness to move to higher levels of competition. 

Tournaments feature up to 4 age groups: U13, U15, U17 and U19. Please see Eligibility Information for more information on which age groups you fit into. By competing in this Series you acquire points, which are shown on the Ontario Ranking System. This allows you to gauge your development and success against other athletes in the province.

A player qualifies for the Ontario Jr. C championships if they have accumulated a minimum of 250 points (and have no more than 799 points) in any one discipline as listed in the Badminton Ontario Ranking System.  Points are listed in the Ontario Ranking System published online and championship qualification is in accordance to the ranking point level at two weeks before the start of the championships. 

All athletes must be a Canadian Citizen.  Non-Canadian citizens, must have landed immigrant status (Ontario PR card) and must have resided in ONTARIO for 12 months prior to the date of the tournament. An athlete is not eligible if such athlete has played in (or registered to play in) a closed championship in any other province or in any other country in the playing year in which the tournament is held.

Any player who qualifies in one discipline may enter in all disciplines of the same age group. Any player that qualifies or plays in the Ontario Jr. C Championship cannot play in the Ontario Jr. A Championships nor the Ontario Jr. B Championship in any age group. 

Ontario Adult Open Tournament Series

Membership required: Performance (A) Membership Card

This tournament series is geared for athletes who are training several times a week to compete at an Elite level. By competing in this Series you acquire points, which are shown on the Ontario Ranking System. This allows you to gauge your development and success against other athletes in the province. There are no eligibility exclusions from these Open events. Anyone is allowed to enter. To compete in the championships, you must be a member and require the level of membership listed in the regulations. You also need to be a resident of Ontario for a minimum of 365 days to compete in the Championships. 

Badminton Ontario Eligibility for 2021-2022 season:

1.       Athlete Participation by Age 

1.1.     All athlete members of affiliated badminton clubs are eligible to participate. 

2.       Badminton Club Representation

Athletes must be a member of a badminton club affiliated with Badminton Ontario. All athletes must be a 2021-2022 season Badminton Ontario cardholder (Performance A) to participate in the tournaments and championships on the Adult Open series.

Ontario Adult Open Championship Qualifications Guidelines

Membership required: Performance (A) Athlete Card

Athlete Eligibility:
All players must be a resident of Ontario.
A non-Canadian citizen, who does not have landed immigrant status, must have resided in Canada for 12 months prior to the date of the tournament. A player is not eligible if such player has played in a closed championship in any other province or in any other country in the playing year in which the tournament is held. Any player who is a member of affiliated clubs in more than one district and competes in a closed championship in one district is automatically declared a member of that district and that club for the Provincial Championships.

Ontario Masters Tournament Series

Membership required: P/T Masters Card

The Ontario Masters Series is for those aged 30+ and offer opportunities for competitive play. The goal of the Masters Series is to continue building the ranking system for proper seeding implementation. 

In the 21-22 season, the series will consist of (potentially) two sanctioned tournaments leading up to the Provincial Championships. Players who participate in the Masters Circuit tournaments are required to purchase a Badminton Ontario Provincial Masters (P/T Masters) card. If you are planning to play Masters National, the Performance A membership is required. You may register for the Performance A membership OR you can upgrade from P/T Masters to Performance A later on.

1.1.7.   60+: born in 1962 or earlier
1.1.8.   65+: born in 1957 or earlier

For every age group, you must be that age as of the first day of competition of the tournament.

2.       Badminton Club Representation

Athletes must be a member of a badminton club affiliated with Badminton Ontario. All athletes must be a 2021-2022 season Badminton Ontario cardholder (P/T Masters) to participate in the tournaments and championships on the Masters series.

Ontario Masters Circuit Series

Membership required: P/T Masters Athlete Card

For all Masters tournaments and Championships, the tournament coordinator will use the Badminton Ontario rankings for seeding purposes.

Athletes must meet the eligibility requirements of their age group. You must be that age as of the date of the championship. Athletes may play down an age group and in multiple age groups. Please read the regulations in full for specific rules regarding playing multiple age groups.
