JUNIOR PAN AM BADMINTON CHAMPIONSHIPS JUST SEVEN DAYS AWAY – PAN AM CENTRE, MARKHAM
Media Release July 13, 2017
Starting on July 21st, over 300 athletes from all over North and South America will compete in the Junior Pan Am Badminton Championships at the Markham Pan Am Centre. Athletes will compete in team competition (July 21-23) and individual competition in U11-U19 categories (July 24-28)
The Junior Pan Am Championships is an exciting and interesting event as many junior athletes compete against fierce international opponents for the first time. A critical piece of experience to have, athletes use this event as a stepping stone in their path of ultimately making it to the Olympic games. Canada’s own two time Olympian Michelle Li remembers her Junior Pan Am experience quite well and how it helped her take her game to the next level.
My very first international tournament was the Junior Pan Ams in Brazil. I was 14 and to this day the memories and experiences I had at that tournament, I still remember like it was yesterday. The friends you meet and the lessons you learn stay with you and acts as a crucial stepping stone to what you decide to do next. It is the tournament I hold most dearest because it was the start of my international career, and I am extremely thankful to have been able to experience it. It pushed me to where I am now and I hope it will have the same impact to all the new young talents as it did for me.
The Junior Pan Am Championships will be held at the state of the art Markham Pan Am Centre. This venue was used during the 2015 Pan Am Games for badminton, table tennis, and water polo. This will be the venue’s first international “legacy” event since the 2015 Games. This will be Canada’s second time hosting these championships. The country and Ontario is prepared to provide a first-class experience to all the athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators who come to witness the amazing action. Canada created such a great atmosphere the first time in Edmonton and performed extremely well in 2012. This year in Markham, Team Canada will work hard to achieve that same level of success and more as the goal is to podium in all the events.
Make sure to mark your calendars today as we move closer towards the opening match of the 2017 Junior Pan Am Championships.
