The XXIII Pan Am Individual Championship was held at the Gimnasio Olimpico in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Around 120 of the best athletes in the Pan Am region competed from Thursday, April 25th to Sunday, April 28th. Our Canadian athletes proudly represented their country by bringing home a total of 9 medals (4 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze).
The Women’s Singles offered an exciting final when two Canadians, Michelle Li and Brittney Tam, went head to head for the second time this season (2019 Yonex Canadian National Championship). Michelle Li won in two straight games but not without a fight by Tam with a final score in the second game of 24-22. This gold medal win is Michelle Li’s 4th crown at the Pan Am Individual Championships.
In Men’s Singles event, Canadian Jason Anthony Ho-Shue takes the bronze medal after losing to the eventual champion Osleni Guerrero (16-21, 21-19, 21-16).
In Men’s Doubles, Canadians Jason Anthony Ho-Shue and Nyl Yakura take home their 4th title in a row after beating Cuban’s Osleni Guerrero and Leodannis Martinez. Spectators witnessed an exciting final as it took three games to determine the eventual champion (21-11, 20-22, 21-10).
The Women’s Doubles final was filled with amazing Canadian athletes. The final match consisted of first seeds Rachel Honderich and Kristen Tsai versus Catherine Choi and Josephine Wu. Rachel Honderich and Kristen Tsai defended their title as Women’s Doubles Champions by beating the other Canadian duo 21-15 and 27-25 in a thrilling final match.
The Mixed Doubles final was an exciting match between Canadians Joshua Hurlburt-Yu and Josephine Wu versus Brazilians Fabricio Farias and Jaqueline Lima where the Canadians defeated the Brazilians 21-14 and 21-19. The other Canadian duos Nicolas Nguyen/Alexandra Mocanu and Nyl Yakura/Kristen Tsai came close behind both taking home a bronze medal.
