3.3 Maximum number of entries for Jr HP A Series #2A = 200 athletes
Please read the Regulations in full. There is significant information that all participants should be aware of prior to the start of the tournament.
1. Tournament Date, Location, and Contact
1.1. The tournament date will be October 26-27, 2019
1.2. The tournament will be held at Haber Recreation Centre located at 3040 Tim Dobbie Dr, Burlington, ON L7M 0M4.
1.3. Approximate start times: Singles will be played on Saturday starting at 9:00 am. Doubles and Mixed will be played on Sunday starting at 9:00 am. Please note that start times are estimated and dependent on the number of entries per age group and discipline.

2.1. All Badminton Ontario events are run under the discretion and direction of the Competitions Committee and are subject to review and change. This tournament will be governed by the rules and regulations as outlined in these regulations. Badminton Ontario adheres to Badminton Canada and BWF rules; unless otherwise outlined in this document. Appeals will be reviewed by the Competitions Committee on a case by case manner.
3. Registration, Entry Fee, and Maximum Entry Restrictions
3.1. Online registration will open on September 24, 2019 at 8:00 PM.
3.2. The registration deadline will be when the maximum capacity has been reached OR October 11, 2019 at 11:59 PM.
3.3. The maximum number of athletes for this tournament will be 200 athletes
3.4. Entry fees for the tournament will be a $80.00 for one discipline, $85.00 for two disciplines, and $90 for three disciplines.
3.5. All entry fees are payable online on Tournament Software only via Paypal through an account or as a guest. Entries without payment are not valid and will not be accepted.
3.6. Athletes must have a valid 19-20 Season Badminton Ontario Performance A Player Card at the time of registration. Athletes applying for a 19-20 Performance A Player Card must belong to a club that is affiliated with Badminton Ontario through their respective district.
3.7. After the online registration portal is closed, there will be no entry extension for new entries. Entries thereafter are deemed late and will only be CONSIDERED for doubles or mixed doubles provided that the athlete’s partner has entered and paid before the online portal is closed. Late fees of an additional $30.00 will be in effect if any additional entries are accommodated.
4. Age Groups, Disciplines, and Eligibility
4.1. Season Tournament Eligibility: Ontario Junior series/circuit regular season tournaments will remain open to any Badminton Ontario members.
4.2. Championship Eligibility:
4.2.1. Each Ontario athlete is only permitted to participate in one (1) Ontario Junior Championship per competition season.
4.2.2. Ontario Junior Championships will only allow Canadian citizens or Ontario Permanent Residents with a minimum of 12-month residency in Ontario from the date of the championships. Participants will be asked for Government Issued ID (Canadian Passport/Birth Certificate/Citizenship or Ontario PR) to verify this.
4.2.3. Athletes cannot have participated or be registered to play in a Junior Championship in another Province/Territory in the same Competition Season.
4.2.4. Athletes qualifying for any one discipline will allow them to register for all other disciplines.
4.2.5. Athletes must attain a minimum of 3500 Ontario ranking points in any one discipline to qualify for the Ontario Junior HP A Championships.
4.2.6. U11 Athletes have no ranking point qualification restrictions to qualify for the Ontario Junior HP A Championships.
4.3. Athlete age eligibility for the 19-20 Season will be as follows:
U11: born in 2010 or later
U13: born in 2008 or later
U15: born in 2006 or later
U17: born in 2004 or later
U19: born in 2002 or later
For every age group, the year stated is the year of birth. For example, if you turn 18 on or after January 1st, 2020, you are eligible to play in the U19 division.
4.4. The tournament will offer the following disciplines:
5. Competition Format and the Draw
5.1.1. Each draw will be run on a Main Round and Consolation Round format. However, rosters with 3-5 entries may be changed to a Round Robin format.
5.1.2. Athletes are entitled to a minimum interval of 15 minutes between matches, if needed.
5.1.3. Athletes are required to be ready to play at least 30 minutes before their scheduled match. Athletes failing to report on court for their match within 10 minutes of the match being announced will be defaulted. No additional warm up time will be allotted for players arriving late.
5.1.4. All draws are approved by a Provincial or National Referee. The tournament draw will be completed and published by the Tuesday (four (4) or three (3) days before the tournament/championship).
5.2. Pairings and Partner Requests
5.2.1. Partner requests, changes, and pairings will be accepted up until two weeks prior to the tournament start date; thereafter will only be considered on a case by case manner. Athletes registered with a partner request may update their partner status up until two weeks prior to the tournament given they have consent from their partner to be paired up for the event.
5.2.2. Partner request pairings and Seeds will be posted by the Saturday (seven (7) days before the event) for viewing. Any questions or concerns must be raised to the tournament coordinator and Competitions Committee before the draw is published.
5.2.3. Athletes whose partner withdraws due to injury/illness after the registration portal is closed will be entered into the partner request pool. Athletes with a partner request status once the registration has closed will be paired up on a first register first serve basis. Those who are not paired up will be put into a reserve list.
5.2.4. Athletes who do not wish to participate with the assigned partner may choose to withdraw from the category entirely before the draws are released; they may not choose to switch for another partner. Please refer to Withdrawal & Default policy after draws are released.
5.3. Seeding and Ranking
5.3.1. The minimum number of seeds in a standard draw will be:
Two (2) seeds: up to fifteen (15) teams
Four (4) seeds: for sixteen to thirty-one (16-31) teams
Eight (8) seeds: thirty-two or more (32+) teams
5.3.2. All seeding will be done using the Badminton Ontario Ranking System as of two weeks before the tournament; questions or concerns may be brought forward to the host committee before any draws are released.
5.3.3. For new pairings in the Ontario Junior HP A series tournaments and Championship, tournament coordinators will estimate the strength of the newly-formed pairs by taking a combination of their separate ranking points.
5.4. Draw Separation
5.4.1. Separation of entries in each draw will use Club separation rules in the draw making process to reduce the number of same club matches occurring in the first round of a draw. Draws with entries from outlying districts may be reviewed to avoid same district matches in the first round for those from outlying districts.
5.5. Consolation Draw Registration
5.5.1. An athlete may choose whether he/she wants to play in the consolation round and must confirm their participation to the draw desk immediately after their first match of each discipline. If an athlete does not register for consolation, the draw desk will assume that they will not participate in the consolation round.
5.6. Scoring & Service Law
5.6.1. All matches, including main round and consolation round, will be two (2) out of three (3) games to 21 points with rally point scoring extended to 30 points.
5.6.2. Tournament officials will be observing for correct service. The following faults will be called if necessary:
18.104.22.168. Continuous forward movement of the racquet,
22.214.171.124. Stationary foot contact with service/receiver court,
126.96.36.199. Shuttle point of contact with server’s racquet,
188.8.131.52. Whole shuttle below waist at contact, and
184.108.40.206. Direction of racquet shaft at contact.
6. Withdrawals and Defaults
6.1. Athletes must withdraw before any draws are posted. For a withdrawal to be valid, the withdrawal must be accepted and confirmed by the person responsible for accepting tournament entries (BON Staff) prior to the seeds being posted.
6.2. If the player withdraws after the draws have been posted or fails to appear for his/her scheduled match, he/she is automatically withdrawn from the remainder of the tournament.
6.3. For doubles, if one player in the pair withdraws, his or her partner will not be penalized.
6.4.1. A player who retires from a match due to illness or injury may continue to play another event at the tournament if the player’s condition has improved to the extent that he may perform at full capacity, whether the same day or a later day.
220.127.116.11. The Sports Medicine Trainer, if present, or Referee shall use his/her best judgment in advising whether the athlete should continue to play another event; however, the final decision will rest with the athlete.
6.4.2. A player can withdraw from a consolation event only if:
18.104.22.168. the player is still competing in another main draw event; AND
22.214.171.124. the player provides the Referee 1 hours’ notice prior to start of the scheduled consolation match.

188.8.131.52.2. In doubles a partner can withdraw the pairing from consolations.
7.1. Full refunds are provided to athletes who withdraw by the withdrawal deadline of two (2) weeks before the start of the tournament.
7.2. After the withdrawal deadline, but before draws are made, refunds are provided less a $25 administration fee.
7.3. Refunds will not be provided for withdrawals after the draws are released.
7.4. In the case of an injury, refunds are provided less a $25 administration fee. A physician’s letter or medical certificate must be provided to BON.
8. Coaching Guidelines
8.1. Any coach wishing to be on the “field of play” at a competition must have a minimum NCCP Regional Level 1 Trained Status AND a valid 19-20 Season Badminton Ontario Coach Accreditation. This can be renewed at www.badmintonontario.ca.
8.2. If a coach is not able to produce their Coaching Accreditation if asked by a tournament official, he/she may be removed from the field of play.
8.3. The maximum number of coaches on court during any interval of any match shall be two (2) coaches. Coaches may leave or join behind the court only when the shuttle is not in play.
8.4. Ontario junior tournaments will allow athletes to receive advice during a match only when the shuttle is not in play.
9. Officials and Tournament Management
9.1. A minimum of one (1) Referee and/or Umpires will be appointed by the Badminton Ontario Tournament Committee to each Junior (A) HP Series event. These officials will perform on-court officiating duties as outlined in their responsibilities.
9.2. A minimum of one (1) draw desk person with tournament software experience will be appointed to each Junior (A) HP Series event for match control duties.
9.3. Two (2) feather shuttles will be provided per match and unlimited feather shuttles (at the referee’s discretion) will be provided for all main round finals. Additional shuttles are to be provided by the participants or can be purchased from the draw desk for $3 per shuttle.
10. Athlete Clothing and Eyewear
10.1. Generally, coloured clothing permitted. Organizers may ask competitors to change inappropriate clothing. Shorts that extend below the knee are deemed inappropriate.
10.2. Any name of a Player appearing on the back of the shirt, if used, shall be identical with the name registered as the Last Name (or an abbreviation thereof) in the Badminton Ontario Player database.
10.3. All junior players in Ontario must wear protective eyewear meeting the ASTM F803 standard whenever there are more than two players on the same court, at all Badminton Ontario or District run events. Badminton Ontario strongly recommends that all players wear protective eyewear meeting the ASTM F803 standard whenever on court. Goggles must be worn over top of prescription glasses.
11. Prizes and Ranking Points
11.1. Gold and Silver medals will be awarded to the Main Round Champion and Finalists.
11.2. Bronze medals will be awarded to Main Round third (3rd) place finishers. There will be a 3/4 playoff match. All semi-finalists will be awarded the same amount of ranking points.
11.3. Consolation winners will be awarded ribbons along with a prize.
11.4. All participating athletes will be awarded ranking points based on where they finish in a draw; each athlete/pair must win at least one match in a draw to gain points. Walkovers will NOT count as a win for ranking points.
11.5. Ranking points are the sum of your top four results in any discipline (with the same partner where applicable) over a 52-week period. More details can be found in the Ontario Junior Ranking System document online or in the handbook.
11.6. All Jr (A) High Performance series tournaments will be counted towards ranking points for the OJRS and for the Ontario Club Competitions Banner.
12. Photography, Video, and Email Consent:
12.1. By registering for this event, you are agreeing to permit photographs and video to be taken of you for the purposes of promoting the sport of badminton and Badminton Ontario. You are also agreeing to receive emails from Badminton Ontario about future events and news items.
13. Waiver of Rights and Acknowledgment of Policies
You understand and agree to the following:
13.1. You are participating at your own choice and, intending to be legally bound, you hereby acknowledge and agree to assume all risk of injury and loss of any kind whatsoever in participating in this event;
13.2. You agree that you shall be solely responsible for all claims, demands, damages, costs, expenses, actions, causes of action, whether in law or in equity, resulting from any loss, personal injury, or property damage, or for the loss or theft of any property, however caused, as a result of, relating to or arising from your participation in this event;
13.3. You hereby indemnify and save harmless Badminton Ontario and its members, agents, and/or representatives and its successors and assigns from and against all liability whatsoever resulting from any loss, personal injury, property damage, loss or theft referred to in the preceding paragraph. You hereby waive, release and forever discharge Badminton Ontario and its members, agents, and/or representatives and its successors and assigns, to the fullest extent permitted by law, from any and all claims, actions, causes of action, liabilities, obligations, damages, omissions or costs as a result of, relating to or arising from your participation in this event;
13.4. You acknowledge that you have fully read and understand the Policies put forth by Badminton Ontario on the Badminton Ontario website and agree to abide by any rules and regulations outlined therein from the time of online entry until the completion of the event; and
13.5. You agree that this release and waiver of liability shall be binding upon you and your heirs, executors, administrators and assigns.
13.6. You and your parent/guardian (if the athlete in under 18 years of age) confirm that you have reviewed the Ministry approved Concussion Awareness Resources within the last 12 months. These resources are available at www.ontario.ca/concussions.
