18.19 Ontario Masters Championships - Lions Advance

1. Tournament Date, Location, and Contact
1.1. The tournament date will be March 22-24, 2019
1.2. The tournament will be held at Lions Advance Badminton Training Centre, located at 5040 Mainway - Unit 4 & 5, Burlington, ON L7L 7G5
1.3 Approximate start times:
- Friday: Singles starts at 1:00 pm until 7:00 pm or last match of the day finishes
- Saturday: Doubles starts at 8:30 am until last match of the day finishes, no later than 6 pm
- Saturday Night Social: Drinks and appetizers starts at 6:30 pm and dinner will be served at 7:30 pm (Dinner at Sotiris restaurant :3135 Harvester Road, Burlington)
- Sunday: Mixed Doubles starts at 9:00 am until last match of the day finishes

2.1. All Badminton Ontario events are run under the discretion and direction of the Competitions Committee and are subject to review and change. This tournament will be governed by the rules and regulations as outlined in these regulations. Badminton Ontario adheres to Badminton Canada and BWF rules; unless otherwise outlined in this document. Appeals will be reviewed by the Competitions Committee on a case by case manner.
3. Registration, Entry Fee, and Maximum Entry Restrictions
3.1. The registration deadline will be March 8, 2019 at midnight OR until the maximum capacity has been reached.
3.2. Entry fees for the tournament will be $100 for the first two events and dinner and $10 for each additional event thereafter; maximum of five events. Entry includes the dinner event on Saturday.
- Maximum of five (5) events, comprised of two (2) singles events, two (2) doubles events, and two (2) mixed doubles events
- Additional dinner tickets are available to purchase for $50 per person including wine at the table.
3.3. All entry fees are payable online through the Tournament Software link only. Entry fees are payable through Paypal through an account or as a guest. Entries without payment are not valid and will not be accepted.
3.4. Athletes must have a valid 18-19 Season Badminton Ontario Competitive B Player Card at the time of registration. Athletes applying for a 18-19 Competitive B Player Card must belong to a club that is affiliated with Badminton Ontario through their respective district.
4. Age Groups, Disciplines, and Eligibility
4.1. Season Tournament Eligibility:
4.1.1. The ON Provincial Masters Championships is open to all Badminton Ontario members.
4.2. Athletes must be a member of a badminton club affiliated with Badminton Ontario. All athletes must be a 18-19 season Badminton Ontario Competitive B Cardholder. Player cards can be renewed at www.badminton.ca.
4.3. Athlete age eligibility for the 18-19 Season will be as follows:
4.3.1. 30+; born March 22, 1989 or earlier
4.3.2. 35+; born March 22, 1984 or earlier
4.3.3. 40+; born March 22, 1979 or earlier
4.3.4. 45+; born March 22, 1974 or earlier
4.3.5. 50+; born March 22, 1969 or earlier
4.3.6. 55+; born March 22, 1964 or earlier
4.3.7. 60+; born March 22, 1959 or earlier
4.3.8. 65+; born March 22, 1954 or earlier
* Age classification determined by the age as of the first day of competition (March 22, 2019).
4.4. The tournament will offer the following disciplines:
5. Competition Format and the Draw
5.1.1. Each discipline draw will be run on a Main Round and Consolation Round format. Rosters with 3-5 entries will be entered into a Round Robin format.
5.1.2. Athletes are entitled to a minimum interval of 15 minutes between matches, if needed.
5.1.3. Athletes are required to be ready to play at least 30 minutes before their scheduled match. Athletes failing to report on court for their match within 10 minutes of the match being announced will be defaulted. No additional warm up time will be allotted for players arriving late.
5.1.4. All draws are approved by a Provincial or National Referee. The tournament draw will be completed and published by the Tuesday (four (4) or three (3) days before the tournament/championship).
5.2. Pairings and Partner Requests
5.2.1. Partner requests, changes, and pairings will be accepted up until two weeks prior to the tournament start date; thereafter will only be considered on a case by case manner. Athletes registered with a partner request may update their partner status up until two weeks prior to the tournament given they have consent from their partner to be paired up for the event.
5.2.2. Partner request pairings and Seeds will be posted by the Saturday (seven (7) days before the event) for viewing. Any questions or concerns must be raised to the tournament coordinator and Competitions Committee before the draw is published.
5.2.3. Athletes whose partner withdraws due to injury/illness after the registration portal is closed will be entered into the partner request pool. Athletes with a partner request status once the registration has closed will be paired up on a first register first serve basis. Those who are not paired up will be put into a reserve list.
5.2.4. Athletes who do not wish to participate with the assigned partner may choose to withdraw from the category entirely before the draws are released; they may not choose to switch for another partner. However, Badminton Ontario strongly recommends all athletes demonstrate fair sportsmanship by participating with the assigned pairings.
5.3. Seeding and Ranking
5.3.1. The minimum number of seeds in a standard draw will be:
- Two (2) seeds: up to fifteen (15) teams
- Four (4) seeds: for sixteen to thirty-one (16-31) teams
- Eight (8) seeds: thirty-two or more (32+) teams
5.3.2. All seeding will be done using the latest results of the Badminton Ontario Ranking System; questions or concerns may be brought forward to the host committee before any draws are released.5.3.3. For new pairings in the Masters tournaments and Championship, tournament coordinators will estimate the strength of the newly-formed pairs by taking a combination of their separate ranking points.
5.4. Draw Separation
5.4.1. Separation of entries in each draw will use Club separation rules in the draw making process to reduce the number of same club matches occurring in the first round of a draw. Draws with entries from outlying districts may be reviewed to avoid same district matches in the first round for those from outlying districts
5.5. Consolation Draw Registration
5.5.1. An athlete may choose whether he/she wants to play in the consolation round. An athlete must confirm their participation status to the draw desk immediately after their first match of each discipline. If an athlete does not register for consolation, the draw desk will assume that that athlete will not participate in the consolation round. There will be no penalty for declining consolation round participation before the consolation draws are made.
5.6. Scoring & Service Law
All matches, including main round and consolation round, will be two (2) out of three (3) games to 21 points with rally point scoring extended to 30 points.
5.6.2. Tournament officials will be observing for correct service. The following faults will be called if necessary:

184.108.40.206. Stationary foot contact with service/receiver court,
220.127.116.11. Shuttle point of contact with server’s racquet,
18.104.22.168. Whole shuttle below waist at contact, and
22.214.171.124. Direction of racquet shaft at contact.
6. Withdrawals and Defaults
6.1. Athletes withdrawing 2 weeks before the tournament start date will receive a full refund. Athletes withdrawing after this date will not receive a refund unless they provide a medical note signed by a physician. This refund will be the registration fee less an administrative fee of $10. All refunds will be performed a couple days after the tournament via method of payment.
6.2. After the release of draws, if an athlete withdraws his/her name from one discipline, he/she is automatically withdrawn from the remainder of the tournament; unless they have been affected by a partner withdrawing. This includes the case that he/she does not desire to play in the consolation round after they have signed up for consolations. If an athlete decides not to sign up for consolations, he/she will still be permitted to play in the remaining disciplines.
7. Coaching Guidelines
7.1. Any coach wishing to be on the playing surface at a competition must have a minimum NCCP Regional Level 1 Trained Status AND a valid 18-19 Season Badminton Ontario Coach Accreditation. This can be renewed at www.badmintonontario.ca.
7.2. If a coach is not able to produce their Coaching Accreditation if asked by a tournament official, he/she may be removed from the playing surface.
7.3. The maximum number of coaches on court during any interval of any match shall be two (2) coaches. Coaches may leave or join behind the court only when the shuttle is not in play.
7.4. Ontario junior tournaments will allow athletes to receive advice during a match only when the shuttle is not in play.
7.5. Coaches must check-in with the Referee along with their Coach Accreditation upon arrival at the venue for the Ontario Masters Championships.
8. Officials and Tournament Management
8.1. A minimum of one (1) Referee and/or Umpires will be appointed by the Badminton Ontario Tournament Committee to the Ontario Masters Championships. These officials will perform on-court officiating duties as outlined in their responsibilities; they are not responsible for draw desk duties.
8.2. A minimum of one (1) draw desk person with tournament software experience will be at each the Ontario Masters Championships for match control duties.
8.3. Two (2) feather shuttles will be provided per match and unlimited feather shuttles (at the referee’s discretion) will be provided for all main round finals. Additional shuttles are to be provided by the participants or can be purchased from the draw desk for $3 per shuttle.
9. Athlete Clothing and Eyewear
9.1. Generally, coloured clothing permitted. Organizers may ask competitors to change inappropriate clothing. Shorts that extend below the knee are deemed inappropriate.
9.2. Any name of a Player appearing on the back of the shirt, if used, shall be identical with the name registered as the Last Name (or an abbreviation thereof) in the Badminton Ontario Player database.
9.3. A protective eyewear is strongly recommended whenever there are more than two players on the same court.
10. Prizes and Ranking Points
10.1. Gold and Silver medals will be awarded to the Main Round Champion and Finalists.
10.2. Bronze medals will be awarded to Main Round third (3rd) place finishers. There will be a 3/4 playoff match. All semi-finalists will be awarded the same amount of ranking points.
10.3. Consolation winners will be awarded ribbons along with a prize.
10.4. All participating athletes will be awarded ranking points based on where they finish in a draw; each athlete/pair must win at least one match in a draw to gain points.
10.5. Ranking points are the sum of your top four results in any discipline (with the same partner where applicable) over a 52-week period. More details can be found in the Ontario Junior Ranking System document online or in the handbook.
10.6. All Ontario Masters tournaments will be counted towards ranking points for the ORS and for the Ontario Club Competitions Banner.
11. Photography, Video, and Email Consent:
11.1. By registering for this event, you are agreeing to permit photographs and video to be taken of you for the purposes of promoting the sport of badminton and Badminton Ontario. You are also agreeing to receive emails from Badminton Ontario about future events and news items.
12. Waiver of Rights and Acknowledgment of Policies
You understand and agree to the following:
12.1. You are participating at your own choice and, intending to be legally bound, you hereby acknowledge and agree to assume all risk of injury and loss of any kind whatsoever in participating in this event;
12.2. You agree that you shall be solely responsible for all claims, demands, damages, costs, expenses, actions, causes of action, whether in law or in equity, resulting from any loss, personal injury, or property damage, or for the loss or theft of any property, however caused, as a result of, relating to or arising from your participation in this event;
12.3. You hereby indemnify and save harmless Badminton Ontario and its members, agents, and/or representatives and its successors and assigns from and against all liability whatsoever resulting from any loss, personal injury, property damage, loss or theft referred to in the preceding paragraph. You hereby waive, release and forever discharge Badminton Ontario and its members, agents, and/or representatives and its successors and assigns, to the fullest extent permitted by law, from any and all claims, actions, causes of action, liabilities, obligations, damages, omissions or costs as a result of, relating to or arising from your participation in this event;
12.4. You acknowledge that you have fully read and understand the Policies put forth by Badminton Ontario on the Badminton Ontario website and agree to abide by any rules and regulations outlined therein from the time of online entry until the completion of the event; and
12.5. You agree that this release and waiver of liability shall be binding upon you and your heirs, executors, administrators and assigns.
