Athletes must check-in with their membership cards upon arrival at the draw desk. 
5.4 All athletes must be a Canadian Citizen.  Non-Canadian citizen, must have landed immigrant status (PR card) and must have resided in ONTARIO for 12 months prior to the date of the tournament. An athlete is not eligible if such athlete has played in a closed championship in any other province or in any other country in the playing year in which the tournament is held. 
7.5. Coaches must register for the Ontario JR (A) High Performance Champion through tournament software link, and must validate their (coaching card) upon arrival at the venue.

Tournament Regulations

SECTION A: Registration and Deadlines
1. Event Details
1.1. The Jr HP (A) Championships – U11/13/15/17/19 Markham Pan Am Centre will be held on April 20-22, 2018.
1.2. The tournament will be held at the Markham Pan Am Centre located at: 
16 Main St, Markham ON, L3R 2E4

2. Entry Deadline

2.1 Registration deadline will be Friday April 6, 2018 at midnight. Late entries will be permitted at the discretion of the tournament coordinator and the Competitions Committee; and will be subject to a $15 late fee in addition to the registration fee
2.2 Late entries: There will be no entry extension for new entries.  Late entries for partners only will be considered up until the Sunday twelve (12) days before the tournament; provided that one athlete of the pair has entered and paid by the entry deadline. Late fees will be in effect if a late entry is accommodated.
2.3 Athletes withdrawing before the registration deadline will receive a full refund. Athletes withdrawing after the deadline will not receive a refund unless they provide a medical mote signed by a physician. This refund will be the registration fee less an administrative fee of $10. All refunds will be performed after the event has finished via method of payment. 
2.4 Athletes who do not have a valid 17.18 Badminton Ontario Performance A membership at the time of the registration deadline will not be permitted to enter. Athletes applying for a 17.18 Badminton Ontario Performance A Membership must belong to a club that is affiliated with Badminton Ontario through their respective district. 
2.5 Maximum entry restrictions: Ontario Jr tournaments will now have a limit on entries.  Maximum number of entries for the Jr HP (A) Championships – U11 /U13 /U15 /U17 /U19 Markham PanAm Centre will be 260 athletes.

3. Publishing the Pairings, Seeds, and Draws
3.1. Partner requests, changes, and pairings will be accepted up until the registration deadline; thereafter will only be considered if the draw is not affected.
3.2. Partner request pairings and Seeds will be posted by the Saturday (seven (7) days before the event) for reviewing. Any questions or concerns must be raised to the tournament coordinator and Competitions Committee before the draw is published. 
3.3. The tournament draw will be completed and published by the Tuesday (four (4) or three (3) days before the tournament/championship) online at www.badmintoncanada.tournamentsoftware.com. 

4. Entry Fee
4.1. Entry fees for the 17.18 Junior HP (A) Championships are $85 for the first event, $10 for an additional event, and free for the third event.
4.2. All entry fees are payable online through the Tournament Software link only.
4.3. Entry fees are payable through Paypal through an account or as a guest.
4.4. Entries without payment are not valid and will not be accepted 

SECTION B: Rules of Play and Competition Format
1. Categories and Age Groups
1.1. The Jr (A) HP Championships – U11/13/15/17/19 Markham PAN AM will include the following categories:
1.1.1. Boys Singles
1.1.2. Boys Doubles
1.1.3. Girls Singles
1.1.4. Girls Doubles
1.1.5. Mixed Doubles
1.2. The Jr (A) HP Championships – U11/13/15/17/19 Markham PAN AM will include the following age groups:
1.2.1. U11
1.2.2. U13
1.2.3. U15
1.2.4. U17 
1.2.5. U19

2. Governance 
2.1. All Badminton Ontario events are run under the discretion and direction of the Competitions Committee and are subject to review and change. The Junior (A) HP Series will be governed by the rules and regulations as outlined in this document. Badminton Ontario adheres to Badminton Canada and BWF rules; unless otherwise outlined in this document. Appeals will be reviewed by the Competitions Committee on a case by case manner. 

3. Competition Format
3.1. The Jr (A) HP Championships U11/13/15/17/19 Markham PAN AM will consist of the categories and age groups listed above.
3.2. Each circuit will consist of the five (5) categories listed above, while age groups will vary depending on the venue.
3.3. Athletes may be entered into a Round Robin format, depending on the number of entries and the size of the draw.
3.4. All draws are approved by a Provincial or National Referee.
3.5. Players are guaranteed 15 minutes rest if needed, between matches.
3.6. Players are required to be ready to play at least 30 minutes before their scheduled match. Players failing to report on court for their match within 10 minutes of the match being announced will be defaulted. 
3.7. Consolation Round Registration:  an athlete may choose whether he/she wants to play in the consolation round.  An athlete must confirm their participation status to the draw desk immediately after their first match of each discipline.  If an athlete does not register for consolation, the draw desk will assume that that athlete will not participate in the consolation round. There will be no penalty for declining consolation round participation before the consolation draws are made.

4. Eyewear
4.1. All junior players in Ontario must wear protective eyewear, meeting the ASTM F803 standard, whenever there are more than two players on the same court, at all Badminton Ontario or District run events. Badminton Ontario strongly recommends that all players wear protective eyewear meeting the ASTM F803 standard whenever on court. Goggles must be worn over top of prescription glasses.

5. Athlete Participation
5.1. Athlete eligibility for the 17.18 season is as follows:
5.1.1. U11: born in 2008 or later
5.1.2. U13: born in 2006 or later
5.1.3. U15: born in 2004 or later
5.1.4. U17: born in 2002 or later
5.1.5. U19: born in 2000 or later
For every age group, the year stated is the birth year. For example, if you turn 18 on or after January 1st, 2018, you are eligible to play in the U19 division. 

5.2. Athletes may compete in one or all events at each series event and qualify for the Championship.
5.3. Ontario Junior series/circuit tournaments will remain open to all Badminton Ontario members. Athletes must be a member of a badminton club affiliated with Badminton Ontario. All athletes must be a 17.18 season Badminton Ontario Performance A Membership Cardholder. Memberships can be purchased online at www.badmintoncanada.tournamentsoftware.com.
5.4. Eligibility: Ontario Junior Championships will only allow Canadian citizens or Ontario Permanent Residents (with a minimum of 12-month residency in Ontario from the date of the championships)
5.5. Withdrawals/Defaults: if an athlete withdraws his/her name from one discipline, he/she is automatically withdrawn from the remainder of the tournament unless they have been affected by a partner withdrawing.  This includes the case that he/she doe not desire to play in the consolation round after they have signed up for consolations.  If an athlete decides not to sign up for consolations, he/she will still be permitted to play in the remaining disciplines.
5.6. All players should be ready to play 30 minutes prior to their first scheduled match. No additional warm up time will be allotted for players arriving late. 
5.7. Approximate start times: Singles will be played on Friday starting at 10:00 am. Doubles and Mixed will be played on Saturday starting at 9:00 am. And, finals and ¾ playoffs will be played on Sunday starting at 10:00 am. Please note that start times are estimated and dependent on the number of entries per age group and discipline.

6. Partner Requests, Seeding, & Ranking 
6.1. Athletes registered with a partner request may update their partner status before the registration deadline given they have consent from their partner to be paired up for the event. 
6.2. Athletes whose partner withdraws due to injury/illness after the registration deadline will be entered into the partner request pool. Athletes remaining with a partner request status once the registration deadline has passed will be paired up on a first register first serve basis. Those who are not paired up will be put into a reserve list. 
6.3. Athletes who do not wish to participate with the assigned partner may choose to withdraw from the category entirely; they may not choose to switch for another partner. However, Badminton Ontario strongly recommends all athletes demonstrate fair sportsmanship by participating with the assigned pairings. 

6.4. All Jr (A) High Performance series will be counted towards ranking points for the OJRS and for the Ontario Club Competitions Banner
6.5. Number of Seeds: The minimum number of seeds in a standard draw will be:
6.5.1. Two (2) seeds: up to fifteen (15) teams
6.5.2. Four (4) seeds: for sixteen to thirty-one (16-31) teams
6.5.3. Eight (8) seeds: thirty-two or more (32+) teams
6.6. All seeding will be done using the latest results of the Ontario Junior Ranking System and Badminton Canada Junior Rankings; questions or concerns may be brought forward to the host committee before any draws are released.
6.7. Notional ranking is a method to estimate the strength of newly-formed pairs; and to seed them when appropriate.  Notional ranking guidelines will be followed for new pairings in the Ontario Junior HP A series tournaments and Championship.
6.8. Draw Separation: B.On Circuit and Championship events will use Club separation rules in the draw making process to reduce the number of same club matches occurring in the first round of a draw. Draws with entries from outlying districts may be reviewed to avoid same district matches in the first round for those from outlying districts.

7. Coaching Guidelines
7.1. Any coach wishing to be on the playing surface at a competition must have a Badminton Ontario Coaching membership. This membership is payable online through www.badmintonontario.ca.
7.2. If a coach is not able to produce their Coaching Membership card if asked by a tournament official, he/she may be removed from the playing surface.
7.3. The maximum number of coaches on court during any interval of any match shall be two (2) coaches.
7.4. Ontario junior tournaments will allow athletes to receive advice during a match only when the shuttle is not in play. 
7.5. Coaches may leave or join behind the court of a match only when the shuttle is not in play.
7.6. Any coach wishing to be on the playing surface at the JR (A) High Performance Tournaments and Championships must have a minimum Regional Level 1 Trained Status under the new NCCP or Certified Level 1 under the old NCCP
7.7. Coaches must register for the JR (A) High Performance Championships through tournament software registration link, and must pick up their accreditation upon arrival at the venue.
7.8. If a coach is not able to produce their Coaching Membership card if asked by a tournament official, he/she may be removed from the playing surface.
7.9. The maximum number of coaches on court during any interval of any match shall be two (2) coaches.

8. Officials
8.1. A minimum of one (1) Referee and/or Umpires will be appointed by the Badminton Ontario Tournament Committee to each Junior (A) HP Series event.
8.2. A minimum of one (1) Referee and four (4) Umpires will be appointed by the Badminton Ontario Tournament Committee to the 2017-18 Junior (A) HP Championships.
8.3. These officials will perform on-court officiating duties as outlined in their staff responsibilities, and are not responsible for draw desk duties.

9. Scoring
9.1. All matches, including main round and consolation round will be two (2) out of three (3) games to 21 points with rally point scoring extended to 30 points.

10. Uniforms & Shuttles
10.1. Generally, coloured clothing permitted. The referee reserves the right to ask competitors to change inappropriate clothing. Shorts that extend below the knee are deemed inappropriate clothing.
10.2. Two (2) feather shuttles will be provided per match and unlimited feather shuttles (at the referee’s discretion) will be provided for all main round finals. Additional shuttles are to be provided by the participants or can be purchased from the draw desk for $3 per shuttle. Badminton Ontario requests that the athletes only use the shuttles of the Series sponsor. 

11. Prizes and Ranking Points
11.1. Gold and Silver medals will be awarded to the Main Round Champion and Finalists
11.2. Bronze medals will be awarded to Main Round third (3rd) place finishers. There will be a 3/4 playoff match. All semi-finalists will be awarded the same amount of ranking points. 
11.3. Consolation winners will no longer be awarded medals; there will be prizes and/or ribbons. 
11.4. All participating athletes will be awarded ranking points based on where they finish in a draw; each athlete/pair must win at least one match in a draw to gain points. More details can be found in the Ontario Junior Ranking System document online or in the handbook. 

12. Championships

12.1  The following players, as of the most recent OJRS to the applicable event, are automatic qualifiers for the Junior (A) High Performance Championships:
1   12.1.1 U11:  no ranking/seeding qualification restrictions; only permitted to participate in one (1) Ontario Junior Championship for the 17.18 season
12.1.2  U13: top male & female players with 4,000 or more points in any one event (singles, doubles, or mixed)
12.1.3  U15: top male & female players with 4,000 or more points in any one event (singles, doubles, or mixed)
12.1.4  U17: top male & female players with 4,000 or more points in any one event (singles, doubles, or mixed)
12.1.5  U19: top male & female players with 4,000 or more points in any one event (singles, doubles, or mixed)
12.2      Each District Member Association of Badminton Ontario may nominate athletes to participate in the Junior (A) HP Championships who did not qualify by points.  Badminton Ontario must receive all nominations from the Districts seven (7) days before the registration deadline.  Badminton Ontario will respect the nomination process set by each District. 
12.3      Request for Exemption and Appeals may be made directly to the Competitions Committee at least seven (7) days before the registration deadline. 
12.4      Athletes who do not qualify by points, did not receive a District nomination, and did not apply for an exemption to enter the Championships before the registration deadline will be removed from the event during the athlete validation process.
