2020 Ontario Winter Games

The Ontario Winter Games is a biennial multi-sport event featuring competition between various Ontario regions in 25 different sports. Badminton is a team competition with athletes (5 girls, 5 boys + 1 alternate for each) competing for their District, vying for gold, silver, and bronze medals. The 2020 Ontario Winter Games is being hosted by the City of Orillia from Feb. 27-March 1, 2020.

The Ontario Winter Games is similar to a mini-Olympics. It is designed to be both fun and competitive. The event is a team competition with teams competing in round robins or pools. Badminton participants are provided with accommodation at a host hotel during the Games. Players are required to agree to a Code of Conduct and an infraction of the Code will result in dismissal from the team, even during the Games. Team members are expected to participate in regular practices and in matches against local clubs/colleges/universities. Players will need to contribute to uniform costs. Players will learn team strategies required to succeed in the competition.

York District will send a team with athletes who are members of an YDBA affiliated club. You must be born in the period 2002 to 2007 to be eligible to play. See the Team Selection Criteria for full details on eligibility. The selection process will be a Ranking style knock-out tournament. Players will get points based on their results for each event. The selection trials will be in singles and doubles events only, although the games will have mixed doubles as part of the competition as well. Selection will be based on your point total in the selection tournament, therefore, you must play in the selection tournament to be selected. There will be two alternates named - one male and one female. Alternates are selected to train with the teams; and will accompany the team to the Games.

Two teams of 5 boys and 5 girls (see age criteria below) will be selected to represent YDBA. The team will have two alternates, one boy and one girl who will only go to the games if a selected player can not attend.
