Victor Lai, former Badminton Ontario Athlete of the Year in his age category for the past two seasons, competed this weekend on home turf, representing the Mandarin Badminton Club. A triple gold medalist this weekend, following his Boy’s Singles, Boy’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles events, Victor praised the tournament and spoke about what it means to use his success at this event as a springboard for future competitions.
“You have to train really hard and enjoy the training, and always do your best.”
Coached primarily by Jeffer Rosobin, Victor received feedback and instruction this weekend from Florah Ng. A coach and member of Mandarin Badminton Club for the past three years, Florah is a former member of the Malaysian National Badminton Team. She was initially brought on board to help out with the Jr. elite athletes, but her position has grown to include full-time responsibilities, like training camps, more intense team training, and private lessons. Florah recognized the value of hosting such a high level Provincial junior competition, and what it means to her to be coaching an athlete of Victor’s calibre.
“There are good times and tough times, but for me it’s especially rewarding when I see them perform well at a tournament like this one!”
