The Ontario Sport Awards celebrate the exceptional contributions of Ontario amateur athletes, coaches and sport organizations. Since 1965, the Ontario Sport Awards have recognized outstanding achievement in Ontario amateur sport and are the highest honour the province bestows on athletes and organizations that demonstrate excellence in sport.

Any Ontario resident who enjoys, participates in or is passionate about sport may nominate an athlete or organization for an award

 

Award Categories

1) Ontario Provincial Athlete of the Year

This award recognizes Ontario provincial level athletes who are driven by an overwhelming determination to excel in their sport. The Ontario Provincial Athlete of the Year award is presented annually to one:

  •  Male Athlete
  •  Female Athlete
  •  Male, Para Athlete
  •  Female, Para Athlete

Award recipients will each receive a monetary reward of $2,000.

Requirements for nomination:

  •  Nominees should have overcome challenges, achieved new performance levels or been a strong ambassador for sport during the award year, 2017.
  •  Individual and team sports are eligible for nomination.
  •  Nominees must be residents of Ontario and in good standing with an Ontario Provincial or Multi-Sport Organization, or funded school sports association.
  •  Athletes who have competed in an Olympic or Paralympic Games are not eligible.

2) Leadership in Inclusive Participation 

This award recognizes success in providing sport programming for Ontario’s priority populations including women and girls, children in low-income families, people living with disabilities, Indigenous populations, Older Ontarians, newcomers and LGBTQ2+ Ontarians.

Requirements for nomination:

  •  Nominees will have made a significant contribution to sport or recreation opportunities for Ontario’s priority populations.
  •  The program provided by the nominee must have started or be operating in the award year, 2017.
  •  Individuals nominated must be residents of Ontario.
  •  Organizations nominated must be part of the provincial amateur sport system, a non-profit organization, a school or municipality in Ontario.

3) System Design Excellence

This award recognizes an organization or individual for demonstrating best practices in providing the right support (trained coaches, officials, volunteers) and pathway to success (programs and service delivery in line with Long Term Athlete Development Model) for Ontario athletes.

Requirements for nomination:

  •  Nominees will have made a significant impact on the development and/or execution of an effective system for delivering industry leading sport programming.
  •  The program provided by the nominee must have started or be operating in the award year, 2017.
  •  Individuals nominated must be residents of Ontario.
  •  Organizations nominated must be part of the provincial amateur sport system, a non-profit organization, a school or municipality.

To submit a nomination, email a completed nomination form and include a clear, high resolution image of the nominee to Games.Ontario@ontario.ca.

**The deadline for nominations is March 16, 2018.**

All submitted nominations will be reviewed and evaluated by an independent selection committee. The winners of the 2018 Ontario Sport Awards will be announced on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the Ontario Sport Symposium.
