An honour bestowed on very few, Badminton Ontario’s Board member, Martha Deacon, was appointed to the Canadian Senate last week by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.  Deacon is a lifelong leader in Badminton, education and a Board member with the Canadian Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Canada.  She is also the Chair of the Organising Committee for the 2018 World Junior Badminton Championships to be hosted in Markham.

In the information provided by the Federal Government, Martha stated: “I believe that sport and education are very powerful in ensuring healthy, inclusive and strong communities coast to coast to coast”

“We are thrilled for Martha – she is certainly a reflection of the quality of people that our sport has within its ranks at all levels” said Ian Moss, President of Badminton Ontario, “it is also such a strong reflection of how we, as Canadians, view ourselves and our responsibilities back to our communities – we are humble in our approach yet strong in our commitments – Martha embodies all these traits whether she is a volunteer on the floor at our competitions or, in the future, working at the highest level of government engagement for the betterment of all Canadians”

Deacon will begin her Senate duties in the next few months but is committed to continuing her engagement with Badminton to the best of her capacities into the future.
