SCARBOROUGH – December 18, 2017 – The Epic Sport Badminton Club played host as the final junior high-performance A tournament of 2017. The Black Knight JR HP A #4 tournament saw 217 youth athletes from across the province compete in the U11, U13, U15, U17, and U19 categories.

Last weekend’s competition displayed an impressive showing by all the athletes. This being the last tournament of the calendar year, many of the participants took their game to the next level to end 2017 with a place on the podium. One such athlete, who took time before her matches to speak with us about the weekend’s competition and the person who pushes her to succeed was Jackie Dent who competes out of the KC Badminton Club.

“The competition this weekend has been really great! From what I have seen the competition is higher then ever which makes me compete harder and strive to improve. The competition is only getting tougher and harder because of the great strides that badminton is doing in Canada and Ontario. Badminton is one of the most played sports in Canada, not only because of the large Asian population in Canada but due to it badminton being an all year sport which appeals to people from all ages.”

Jackie gave a very strong showing at the tournament earning three first place finishes resulting in a triple crown title by winning in the girls singles, girls doubles and mixed doubles categories of her age group. She attributes her accomplishments to her training and her coach Kevin Cao.

“I train six days a week, with one free day to relax though I usually end up playing a few games on my day off for fun. I also train by reviewing at my old games either after a tournament or a loss, I review what went well and what I need to improve which I fix when I physically train. My coach is also a one of the reasons I have done so well, he has been my coach since I was very young. With his help and guidance, I have been able to represent Canada and exceed in not only my own but other age categories as well.”
